I've had a chance to try now.
The `cat >/dev/tty1` test works (I actually used `echo hello
>/dev/tty1`, no practical difference).
Changing the 0 to a 1 in the /etc/ttys file and rebooting does work. For
some reason I had to leave the emulated system down for a minute or so
after the reboot before I could connect again.
