Separation of users from developers of SIMH is complicated by the fact
that users must manually configure their systems, such as downloading
and installing the libraries for Ethernet support, and then compile
and link the simulator(s) they want to use. Unlike the world of
products with paid developers and Windows-centric marketing, where you
are likely to have only one or two shrink-wrapped choices, SIMH is
available to any user wiling to put in a minimum amount of effort with
little more than a C compiler and a rudimentary development
environment. Perhaps the solution is for two types of "makefiles" (or
batch scripts, or whatever): one for developers that want to minimize
the time it takes to test new SIMH code, and may be confined to run
well only on Linux, for example, and one for users, who only
occasionally need to make a new version, but runs on all the systems
users will want to use as a SIMH host.
