Also, don't forget that the host and the virtual VMS system cannot
communicate over the same network card.

You either have to have the host and virtual systems on separate network
cards attached to the same network, OR you have to connect the virtual
VMS system to a virtual network card that has been *bridged* to the real
nic, using a TAP/TUN (linux) or OpenVPN (Windows) virtual network
device.

Bridging is done in linux with br0, and in Windows XP with Control
Panel, Network Connections, select the two adapters, Right click and
select Bridge Connections.

When you ran TCPIP$CONFIG.COM did you select option 1, "Core
environment"?
What is the output of these commands:
$ TCPIP
TCPIP> SHOW INTERFACE QE0/FULL
TCPIP> SHOW SERVICES
TCPIP> SHOW HOSTS/LOCAL

The messages about proxy services are notmal.
