You do know that you can download a snapshot of any commit from github?  Almost any screen you are on has a "Download ZIP" over on the right side, e.g., <https://github.com/simh/simh/archive/master.zip> from <https://github.com/simh/simh>.  For "master" you can substitute any commit, e.g. <https://github.com/simh/simh/archive/0b1050853efb5c1cb52f5ad24d6423d6e4a6f69d.zip> or any commit-ish, e.g., <https://github.com/simh/simh/archive/HEAD~2.zip>.  If you're fixated on tar for some reason, just substitute ".tar.gz" for ".zip" in any of those URLs.
