So they were pretty much the same on your system. Perhaps it was some 
timing anomaly related to something else running on my system when I 
tested it then.

On my system, this time the interleaved average numbers were:

-O2: Average        10.8        23373       12.3
-O3: Average        10.3        23761       13.0

I guess if I wanted to have a more reliable test, I'd renice the vax 
process up to a higher priority so it wasn't running in the background.

Still, the differences are so subtle that it's not going to be a 
noticeable difference.
