Peter,

I use linux-decnet (http://linux-decnet.wiki.sourceforge.net/) on a  
file server whose sole purpose is to backup Unix/Linux/OpenVMS  
systems.  You can write/read Backup save sets directly over the  
DECnet to the linux-decnet server.  I run the Backup save sets  
through gzip on the Linux box to shrink them down to save space.
