Hmmm....!

Further investigation using a filemon tool (determines what files are being
accessed and by what processes) shows that the VMS system disk (and any
other disk subsequently mounted) has a number of reads performed on it with
a transfer size of 4096 bytes (which all look pretty sensible) and then all
of a sudden the transfer size balloons to 65536 bytes and the read offset
continually increments right up to the maximum size of the virtual disk.
