The general principle is that all of /usr/lib is likely to be replaced
if the operating system is upgraded.  /usr/local/ can be arranged so
as not to be replaced.

Speculate that you did not use <tab> to indent the whitespace in the
Makefile.  This is a poorly documented but necessary syntax
idiosyncrasy of Makefiles.
