[Simh] Changing tapes/disks under Linux

I had a thought...
If I name my tape file (attached to MTA0) TapeMTA0.
If simh opens the file once and read/writes to it until until the
user assigns another
file to that time drive, at that point closes it, and opens the new
file then even If
I rename the "TapeMTA0" file in a shell window, simh will continue to
use the old file.
Now, If simh closed the file after each access and opened it fresh
for each access, I
can rename the file, and rename some other file in it's place to
"change tapes" or
"change disk packs".
Would the overhead of the open and close calls be too much?
