Actually, VMS power-fail stowage and recovery are remarkably similar
to how a laptop goes into hibernate.

The quote from the VMS internals book is by Virginia Woolf:

   For there are moments when one can neither think nor feel.
   And if one can neither think nor feel, she thought, where is one?

On configurations with supported power-fail recovery, one of the
steps is to read the RTC on recovery.  It's been a while since I
had a system with power-fail recovery (11/730 with battery backup,
probably circa VMS 4.5) but I think it's still in there.
