could it be that your default directory is a search list (e.g. something involving SYS$SYSROOT) when you issue the DIR on the tape?<BR>

If that is the case, the behavior you're seeing is expected.<BR>

I have just noticed that when I mount an ANSI Tape (not foreign) and do a<BR>
directory listing I get a listing of all of the files on the tape twice<BR>

Like this<BR>

A dump of the tape shows the files on the tape once only....<BR>
<BR>
The same thing happens if I create the tape on the vax<BR>
<BR>
Is this normal ??<BR>
