You're right, I misread words as bytes.  I don't believe relative files have record numbers.  VFC file?  I don't have much exposure to those, they are a VMS invention not seen on PDP11s that I can recall.  I seem to remember a particular VFC type used for listing files, where the fixed prefix is a line number.
