[Simh] EXT :Re: Simh Digest, Vol 172, Issue 4

In addition to Dave's comments:

For a MSwin PC, I've switched to VcXsrv (vcxsrv.sourceforge.net) from
Xming.  It's free, and works better - especially the mouse &
interactions with local windows.

If your host is VMS, you may need to SET DISPLAY; a unix, set the
DISPLAY environment variable.  This is often magically done by your SSH
client & server.  You may need to enable X11 forwarding.  (e.g. in
PuTTY, under X11 options; on the host - it depends.  For Unix, see
sshd_config.)

To simplify life, I recommend getting X11 working with your client (X11
server, ssh - or other remote terminal) from a modern OS first.  (I use
Linux.)  XClock is my favorite test.  Once that's sorted out, work on
the Motif machine.

If the host is Unixy, one frequent gotcha is the MIT Magic Cookie
failing if you use su/sudo.

As Dave said, if you want specific help, provide full environment
information.  OS on each end; X server, how client and server are
connected (protocol, software).  Including versions.

Also, note that x.org has deprecated a number of the X11 extensions that
VMS & Tru64 liked.  So the latest version of the X11 server may not be
the best - versions matter.

Have fun.
