Well, some very early machines were not binary, but decimal... Konrad
Zuse was a believer in binary, though.
But really, binary, octal or hex. It's just representation. Once you sit
with binary, it is a very obvious and simple step to decide you want it
a bit more compact, and move to octal.
Hell, I think I can still program a PDP-8 straight from my head. The
instruction set is simple enough that I did learn the whole thing.
Programming on the front panel after that is easy.
