[Simh] EXT :Re: Setting DECSERVER 90L to factory defaults

There does not appear to be a "factory reset" procedure for the 90L. I went down and looked at my standalone 90L+ and there is no reset port.

It appears that the correct reset procedure is to clear/set authorized mode as appropriate (using the power cycle as authorization), and then set the parameters on the server and on each port as required for the new configuration. I vaguely remember having to do this procedure after a power spike killed one and having the 90L replaced by Digital with a "used" unit.

As you pointed out, the 90L and 90L+ were fairly brain dead terminal servers, and didn't have much in the way of management options or connectivity other than LAT.

IIRC, the manual at http://manx.classiccmp.org/collections/mds-199909/cd2/network/dsrvdom1.pdf is all I ever remember getting with the 90L. The only way for "better" 90L terminal server management was if it was inserted into the large ("900") chassis and managed with the large chassis management application, and even then your 90L options were limited. It wasn't until the 90TL and the 900TL that remote and group management got easier.

We have the physical device. With respect to the first suggestion to find someplace where there might have been a reset button, we have removed the plastic covers and there is nothing visible.

On Decserver-90TL, there is a reset button accessible from the front. Such does not exist on Decserver-90L.

The comment with respect to the power/power on sequence is to allow for the authorize password change. If one doesn't cycle power immediately after changing the password, the change is ignored.

Given the simplicity of the device, we never enabled authorization or passwords. We have some Decserver-200's which are much more complex devices that have reset buttons as well MOP operations, i.e. download/upload of settings, ETC.

http://manx.classiccmp.org/collections/mds-199909/cd2/network/dsrvdom1.pdf

Pages 40-41 in the PDF (pages 4-13 and 4-14 of the DECserver 90L user
manual).

You need physical access to the 90L, because you have to power cycle it to
change from Authorized (uses passwords) to not.
