Okay, this is one of these "oh god, kill me" situations :-) turned out that
SHADOW_MAX_COPY, which should have defaulted to 4, was set to zero on both my
machines.

Changed it to 32, and tadah...

Many, many thanks for that heads-up! I don't know what deep and dark alley I'd
have stumbled in, trying to troubleshoot this frankenstein setup ;-) and in the
meantime the systems have been patched too, so all is peachy.
