Surely you jest.  The speed of CPUs has increased by three orders of
magnitude since the days of the VAX-780.  Measured nowadays in GHz not
MHz.  So it would take a lot of interpretive overhead to throw that away.

As I recall, the 780 was about 0.5 MHz, and the run-of-the-mill
netbooks are 1.6 GHz.
