That was "cutting a long story short". Perhaps too short.

I'm familiar with the paper and I understand the reasoning perfectly.  
And my long practical experience with 'make' leads me to similar  
conclusions - which was why I posted. However, as you'll see from the  
older thread on this topic, not everyone finds the paper persuasive.
