High resolution timer ... isn't this what is needed to make the
simulator idle some when the simulated CPU is idle?

But this feature doesn't seem to work for me on x86 Fedora installs,
and I do compile with -lrt.

Is there something more to make this feature work, or maybe I'm just
doing something wrong?  Or perhaps it is not expected to work on x86
Linux?
