[Simh] Disappeared doc files

Some doc files disappared from the source zip file sometime between
v3.5.2 and v3.6.1.

The files are at least the following:
   simh_doc.txt
   simh_faq.txt
   simh_swre.txt
   VAX/vax_doc.txt

I believe they have been replaced by PDF files at:
 http://simh.trailing-edge.com/pdf/all_docs.html

Unfortunately,
 1) I don't have docs I can load up in my text editor anymore
 2) I can't grep through the PDFs
 3) I can't send patches
 4) the connection between a release and its docs is broken

Can we work out a better solution?

For example something like "almost plain text" format which contains
markup so light weight that it looks like an ordinary text file but
which can still be converted to HTML and PDF?
