[Simh] Use muliprocessor with SIMH

Hello

I've already migrated VAXes to Charon VAX
I'm in the process of
- migrating Vaxes to Simh
- Alpha to Charon Alpha
- or Alphas to Itanium

Your question about migrating VAX to Alpha, was a good question years ago.
I've had an Alpha in field test before DEC released AlphaVMS 1.0
So I did a lot of work porting or translating software from VAXes to Alphas
But that's many years ago

Nowadays, HP have stopped or will soon stop selling Alphas
So Alphas will soon become obsolete. So if you have to migrate Application
from VAX to something else, Alphas is no more the good choice

All the VMScustomers I've, have the same problem, their applications are
obsolete.
For example one of them, is still running VMS5.5-2H4.
Just because his main application was developped years ago by xxx
consulting.
And xxx was asking a lot of money to upgrade to VMS6 ten years ago.
And xxx had stopped working in the VMS world 8 years ago
So the application is still running on VMS 5.5-2H4 on a Windows machine with
Charon VAX
It was easier to port from VAX to Charon , that vesting tho whole thing .....
Simh would have been another solution. But it was the customer's choice
(you know the "software" vs "freeware" issue ;-)

Another customer is running its job on Alphas VMS 7.3-1.
But the editor of one of its application doesn't support VMS 8.x.
So we'll try to "Aest" that application to Itanium.
But we'll also try to simulate the Alpha on a PC (with Charon AXP)

Bests Regards

Gilbert

Dear Micheal,
Please to hear that so many openVMS system are still running.
However I wonder why you are not running multiple applications together on
alpha servers. The migration (depending on which kind of applications) is in
many times simple and you will get a great performance and it is good to
rebuild your application and cleanup the mess for all years.
Probably you can run this with two AXP DS20E, which can be bought
refurbished. In this case only 2 systems needs to be maintained.
I used SIMH for the migration for replacement of some VAX marcro functions
to C variants. Also we checked the charon VAX emulator.

Kind regard
Broer

Hi,

we migrated our complete VMS-VAX-hardware (microVAX 3100/95, 3100/98)
including our production-systems to SIMH from 02/2005 to 08/2005, in all 47
nodes....

SIMH works pretty good in daily business (all-in-one/ACMS/RdB-applications)
with uptimes up to 300 days...

Kind Regards,
