No luck there. I noticed the "I." before, and tried the other "I"'s
without space. No change

I installed MinGW 5.0.2, and that gave me gcc 3.4.2.
Kevin suggested that gcc's switches might be position dependent, so I
moved all the ${VAXOPTS} to before the first file name, again, no change.
